What to do, step by step

1. If you don’t have a referral yet, it starts with your doctor or the GAP (811, option 3). Say you’ll take the first available surgeon; the request then goes through the regional desk, the CRDS.
2. Already referred and months without news? Call the hospital’s outpatient clinic. Ask where you sit, and whether another surgeon in the department moves faster.
3. Once you’re on the operating list, say yes to cancellation call-backs, and answer your phone.
4. And if nothing moves, go back to your doctor for a referral somewhere else. Another region is allowed, and sometimes that’s months saved.

The trick: ask for the first available surgeon instead of a specific name. Tell your doctor you’re willing to travel too, because a referral to another region is allowed and the gap sometimes runs into months. And if you’re offered a date, think before turning it down, because a refusal can put your file on hold.
