How to get it

Nothing to book if your baby is born in hospital: it is done before you go home.

Born at a birthing centre or at home: the test is done at the nearby hospital in the first month.

If the test is not passed, an audiologist calls you within 5 days to set an appointment.

If your baby has a risk factor, call the paediatric audiology service for the 8 to 10 month check.
The details
Who it’s for
Offered to every newborn in Quebec. The test takes a few minutes, does not hurt and is usually done while the baby sleeps.
How often
Once, before leaving the hospital, or in the first month for babies born at a birthing centre or at home. Babies with risk factors (for example deafness in the family) get a hearing check around 8 to 10 months.
Cost
Free for all newborns in Quebec. Babies born outside Quebec and covered by the RAMQ must be referred by a doctor before 1 month of age.
